Naturally from the amazon of South America, the Green Neon Tetra are the smallest of their tetra family. They live in heavily planted waters that are very acidic.  However, these hardy fish adapt well to non acidic water found in most homes.  In the wild, these shy, peaceful fish live in large communities.  In your tank, they would excel in shoals of 6 or more.   The larger the shoal, the happier these fish are and you will see more schooling behavior. These midwater tetras will thrive in community tanks with other fish of similar size.  They will do great with bottom dwellers like shrimp, oto's or Cory's as well as with mild center piece fish like gourami's.

  • Average adult size: .6 - 1 inch (1.5 - 2.5 cm)
  • Typical purchase size: .25 - 1 inch (.6 - 2.5 cm)

 

RECOMMENDED TANK PARAMETERS: 

  • Temperature: 73° to 81° F (23 - 27 C)
  • pH: 4.0 - 7.5 (check with your supplier to see what their water parameters are)
  • KH: 1 -8 dKH
  • Minimum tank size: 10 Gallons
Natural Habitat

Green Neons come from South America rivers where they swim in shallow, slow-moving and dark colored waters.

Feeding and Diet

Green Neons will thrive with flake or pellet food. They should only be fed what can be consumed in 30 to 60 seconds. They also would like to be fed twice a day, but it is perfectly fine to only feed once a day.

Tankmates and Compatibility

Green Neon Tetras are a peaceful community fish. They will thrive with other gentle community fish like Corydoras, honey gourami or ember tetras.

Shrimp Compatibility

Green Neon Tetras and shrimp are generally considered safe together. While they are peaceful with adult neocaridinas, shrimplets might become a delightful snack.
Aquascaping

Green Neons like dark waters, sandy floors covered in fallen leaves, tree roots and wood branches. They are used to a dense covering with minimal light filtration.
