Discovered in 1980 as a morph of the African cichlids, the Electric Yellow Lab is a brilliant yellow with a black coloring their dorsal fin.  These peaceful cichlids are not a community fish, preferring to live solo or in pairs. Lake Malawi, where natively found, offers these Labs a sandy bottom and lots of rocks.  These shy cichlids will pop in and out of hiding holes provided by rocks and are highly interactive as long as they feel safe.  They may show semi-aggressive behavior to fish of similar size and shape.

  • Average adult size: 4 - 5 inches (10.2 - 12.7 cm)
  • Typical purchase size: 2 - 3 inch (5.1 - 7.6 cm)

  • Temperature: 73° to 79° F (23 - 26 C)

  • Minimum tank size: 30 Gallons
Natural Habitat

These cichlids come from Africas lakes where they find lots of hiding spots in the rocky shorelines. Electric Yellow Labs will love a tank that has rocks for them to hide in and pop out of.

Feeding and Diet

Electric Yellow Labs are true omnivores. They need both plant and protein based food. Spiraling flakes, veggie pellets and brine fish are are great food source. Tankmates and Compatibility

Electric Yellow Labs are an African Cichlids, although they are the more peaceful, semi-aggressive species. They do well in a tank with other peaceful or semi-aggressive species. They also are not a community fish and would thrive in groups no more than 2 per tank to avoid dominance.

Shrimp Compatibility

These semi-aggressive fish are not a friend to shrimp. They love to eat them as snacks.

Aquascaping

Yellow Lab Cichlids require rocky caves, fine sand and stable layouts to mimic their native Lake Malawi habitat.
